Retrospective Futures: Seoul Regeneration

Sang Hoon Youm, Hanuy Park
Retrospective Futures: Seoul Regeneration
Retrospective Futures: Seoul Regeneration imagines the unique future of Seoul through the lens of urban regeneration. Following the development led period, in which existing conditions were demolished and redeveloped with apartment complexes, the city of Seoul is creating a new future by rediscovering and utilizing various existing resources. Seoul’s multidimensional and complex layers cannot be viewed with a singular value and solution. Local based attitudes and critical perspectives on the individual regions are required and each of the different localities needs to be integrated and operated organically. Retrospective Futures attempts to re-evaluate the meaning of urban regeneration in Seoul through a critical view, stepping away from the unconditional trust of the word regeneration and exploring the multi-layered meaning of urban regeneration in various angles. Why do we need multiple connections in Seoul? What is an architectural welfare and what are the standards? Do you preserve or reinterpret history? How do you make memories? How can you create interest in a city? What is the condition of settlement? Retrospective Futures seeks to imagine the future of Seoul through each visitor’s individual answers to these issues and questions of Seoul Regeneration.
