Barcerlona | Mixed Use, Mixed Time, Mixed People

Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) & Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC)
Barcerlona | Mixed Use, Mixed Time, Mixed People
Over the decades, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), densely urbanized and with little space to build, has been working to build public facilities in strategic points throughout the city. More than letting the market organize the basic services for the citizens, a public network of facilities―markets, health centers, libraries, cultural centers, auditoriums, kindergartens, schools, civic centers, and city councils―are built and open to everyone. These centers are the city’s attraction points for citizens, to be located in no less than 10-minute walking distance. The architecture of these buildings become a key element that defines the identity of neighborhoods. They become the places where families and friends play, interact and cohabit and, used for the public events. AMB, in collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, presents a selection of the city’s mixed-use public facilities via drawings and videos, showing how they engage with urban life. If the city of the future is a metropolis of neighborhoods, these public spaces and buildings comprise the core of what we understand as their urbanity.
